The Unitarian Universalist Principles
As Unitarian Universalists we share a value system which is expressed by a set of principles and purposes affirmed and promoted by the Unitarian Universalist Association and the Ballou Channing District. Our programs, services, religious education offerings, and vision for thefuture reflect these values.
The inherent worth and dignity of every person.
Justice, equity and compassion in human relations.
Acceptance of one another and encouragement of spiritual growth in our congregations.
A free and responsible search for truth and meaning.
The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large.
The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all.
Respect for the interdependent web of existence of which we are a part.
Mission Statement
In June 2003, we adopted the following mission statement to help
articulate our goals:
The First Unitarian Church of Providence is a safe harbor that welcomes liberal religious seekers. With intention, energy, commitment and love, the people of this diverse faith community gather to:
- Replenish and expand the spirit and the mind throughout life's journey
- Honor each other's gifts and minister to each other, and
- Transform shared values into action in the world.
More than one thousand congregations make up the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), which represents our interests on a continental scale.
Join Our Community
An important part of our Unitarian Universalist tradition is the democratic process. Many important decisions, including calling our ministers, are made by the membership. While you are actively involved in our community, please consider becoming an official member. Whether you are planning on staying in Providence for a year or for decades, we invite you to join us in membership and support our community for as long as you are able.
If you are interested in becoming a member of our community:
- Please speak to our interim minister, the Rev. John Nichols, on Sundays, or
- Call the church office to make an appointment -- 401-421-7970
